Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12th, 1809 in a log cabin. His family lived in Kentucky. Later the Lincolns moved to Indiana. That winter in Indiana, his mother died. A year after his father remarried. Her name was Sarah Bush Johnston. Even though Lincoln had very little education, he would read by the fire light at night and that is how he became so intelligent. The first job Abe took up was on a flat boat carrying cargo. Then he decided to open a little store. One day a man came in with a barrel. Abe bought the barrel. Inside he found a book that interested him. It was about lawyers. He then decided that he wanted to help people in another way. There was a man by the name of John T. Stuart, who was a lawyer. He taught Abe about law. In 1836, he began a successive partnerships with John T. Stuart, Stephen T. Logan, and William Herndon. This still was not enough for Abe. He held a number of government offices. Then in 1861, he became the 16th president. Now during this time the Civil War took place. Then in 1865, an angry man shot and killed President Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln believed that slavery was wrong and tried to stop it from spreading around the United States. There was an Act called the Kansas-Nebraska Act which was passed by Congress in 1854. This Act was to open lands to slavery that previously did not allow slavery. Lincoln was against this for obvious reasons. He also believed in the Union. |
