Robert E. Lee was born on January 19th, 1807. He lived at Stratford, Virginia. Lee was a caring person. When Robert went off to West Point, his mother wrote to a cousin, How will I get on without Robert? He is both a son and daughter to me. On June 30th, 1831 he was married to Mary Rudolph Custis. Robert E. Lees role was captain during the Mexican war in 1846. He was then promoted to Colonel in 1861. Then when he was ready to retire, a great decision came in his life. He had to choose whether to stay with the Union or go with the Confederate. After hours of thinking, he made the decision. He was going with the Confederate. He couldn t turn against his people. Robert E. Lee was opposed to secession and considered slavery evil. His opinion about the United States were no north, no south, no east, no west - but the broad Union and all its might and strength past and present. He was forced to choose between the Union and the Confederacy. After hours of thinking, he decided to go with the Confederacy. He could not turn away on his people. |
