Interesting Monuments

The Eternal Light and Peace Memorial is a monument with a flame that never goes out. President Franklin Roosevelt dedicated it on the 75th Anniversary of the battle.

Something interesting to look at on the monuments that have officers astride horses is the horse's front legs. If they have no legs up, it means the officer was not hurt. If the horse has one leg up, the officer was wounded. If the horse has two legs up, the officer was killed.

The Pennsylvania memorial is a huge structure with plaques on the side of the foundation listing different regiments. It also has various statues of different officers on the four arches.

The Virginia Memorial is in memory of the Virginians that died in Pickett's Charge.

The Jennie Wade House is the site off the only townsperson killed during Gettysburg. She was shot in the back by a Confederate sharpshooter when making biscuit dough. It now shows how the townspeople reacted to the battle at Gettysburg. Call (717) 334-4100 for more information.
