1863: After Gettysburg
Chickamauga
The rest of 1863's summer was quiet except for small skirmishes and confrontations. I early September, a General from the Union Army, General Rosecrans, took the Army of Cumberland to Chattanooga. He split up his forces, and the General in charge of Chattanooga, General Bragg, gave it up, but he fled with his troops to attack half of Rosecran's force. The Union General realized almost too late that Bragg was making this move, and just in time, he recalled his troops.
On September 19, they met again near West Chickamauga Creek. Come afternoon of the next day, Rosecrans was ready to retreat, but General George H. Thomas saved the day and won the nickname "Rock of Chickamauga."
Chattanooga Under Siege
Rosecrans discovered that he was under siege. The Confederates had closed off his supply routes! But General Grant came to the rescue. Soon, all the Union soldiers were well fed, clothed, and stocked with ammunition.
Fall of General Bragg
Bragg had two important positions--Lookout Mountain, and Missionary Ridge. Grant drove him out of both. On November 30, Bragg resigned.
