Daily Life On The Shuttle
BEDS AND SLEEPING
An interesting thing is that the bunks are stacked in fours. They have to sleep with ear plugs and eye covering.
In the space shuttle things are weightless and things float in the air. When the crew go to bed they have to tie themselves down with velcro. The best thing about sleeping in space is that they can sleep anyway they want or in any position they want. The bad thing is that they cannot let themselves go free in the spacecraft or they will damage the spacecraft.
Some of the crew members have different shifts and they all sleep at different times. If one astronaut is piloting the shuttle then that person will set up a hammock from wall to wall. The beds that the members sleep in is a sleeping bag also they srap themslef up with a velcrow or srap. That means that they sleep lying down just like on Earth. The astronauts sleep from eight to six hours.
BATHING
It is hard for astronauts to take a bath because water does not flow in the weightless environment. They have to dab water on their bodies when they wash their bodies and when they wash their hands there are no sinks so they dab water on their hands.
Shuttles do not have a shower. When the astronauts take a bath they have to wash their bodies with a special detergent, alcohol, or dry shampoo. Then they wipe it off with a towel. Their tooth paste is like a powder because they could swallow it or wipe it off with a towel. It is just like when the dentist brushes your teeth.
TOILETS
Toilets in space look like the ones on Earth. To use the toilet the astronaut has to buckle down to the toilet with a seatbelt. After they are done using the toilet, they have to pull a lever and the waste will get sucked up.
The toilet works like a vacuum cleaner becuase there cannot be any water or liquid in the shuttle. If the waste does not get sucked up then it will float around in the bathroom and in the shuttle.
