Voyager One and Two
Voyagers were sent from NASA. NASA sends most of our space shuttle, space craft, and space probes. The USA sent this space probe up in space because the scientists want to know if there is life on the planets.
Voyager I and II were launched to go to the planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Both Voyagers were about the size of a car so that is not very big. If one of the Voyagers were broken the other one would take its place.
Both of them carried all kinds of special cameras and instruments. The cameras would take close-up pictures and the probe would be controlled by the people on Earth.
When they were on the planets, they would also take the temperatures of the planets, and find what they are made of. The dangers for both of the Voyagers was the Asteroid belt because it is fast moving and big. The asteroids orbit the sun. There are tons of them that are between Mars and Jupiter.
The Voyagers carried a twelve inch gold-plated copper disk. That disk was used for taking sounds and images to take to the planets.
Voyager took sounds from Earth and put it together with songs from different countries. There are all kinds of songs that are written by Bach and Mozart and many more. The sounds from Earth are sounds of thunder, surf, wind, birds, whales, and other kinds of animals. The scientists also took greetings in different languages. The scientists do all of this because they want to see if there is life on the planets. They put the songs in there because if there is life then the living things might come out and want to see what is going on.
The total cost for the Voyager mission from May 1972 to the last mission that was when Voyager went to Neptune and that was about 20 years. The cost was 865 million dollars! That may seem expensive but for each person in US the cost was 20 cents per year.
