Io
Io is the fifth of Jupiter's moons and just a little bit bigger than our Moon. Io has a core of iron mixed with iron sulfur. It is 390,179,268 miles from Earth. There are very few impact craters on Io and that means that it is very young. Io looks like a pizza with olives. The brightness of the surface indicates the presence of water. Voyager I found hundreds of volcanic calderas and some are even active. Pele, is the largest volcano that was first discovered on Io. There are active volcanos on Io with smoke rising up to 300 kilometers high. When Io's volcanos erupt, the vents appear to be sulfur or sulfur dioxide. Galileo has shown many changes from the time Voyager I went. From Galileo scientists learned that Io's surface is very active. Galileo plans to take pictures of Io after it finishes its research on Europa. Some of the hottest spots on Io reach the temperature of 1,500 kilometers. The lowest temperature is 130 K. Io lies 26,210 miles from Jupiter's center. It would be kind of fun to live on Io because when the lava erupts then it will get hot and then you could cook some food in the floor or something. You could cook bacon or eggs. A bad thing is that when the volcanoes erupt the smoke rises high and has sulfur dioxide in it. The few impact craters make Io smoother and easier to live because when there are lots of craters it is hard to live because it will be very bumpy. Another good thing is that if you live on Io you will stand out because Io looks like a pizza and people will say "Look at that pizza planet!" When you go to Io make sure that you bring your swimsuit because it will get really hot with all of those volcanoes. The best thing about Io is that there is water. Water is the most important thing you need to survive with. Without water you will die! With water, you might even be able to grow your own plants! vision by Cherie |
