How Maui Slowed the Sun

Maui is a boy whose mother is a tapa (kapa) beater. Maui's mother was very unhappy because she did not have enough time in the day to dry her tapa because the sun went too fast across the sky.

So Maui went and captured the sun with a magical lasso. Maui tried to come up with an agreement with the sun because it refused to slow its pace across the sky. The sun was very stubborn. So Maui beated it until it agreed to slow down although it only agreed to slow and take its time across the sky for only half a year. Maui and his mother were okay with that.

That agreement that Maui and the sun made still exists today because those halfs of the year, one when the sun travells fast and when it slows down are now known as Summer and Winter.

I interviewed Kumu Pohaku of King Kaumualii Elementary School. He helped me with this legend.
