Beautiful Poipu

Ouch, I have a sunburn! One of the hottest and sunniest beaches on Kauai is Poipu. It's on the southwest point of Kauai. Poipu means "crashing waves" but the water is usually calm with a few waves to catch a ride on.

The only bad thing about Poipu beach is that it is a popular beach and has many hotels and resorts. That means there are always a lot of people there. There is a lot to do there; like sailing and catamaran adventures. You can surf, body board, body surf and play on the white sand beach all day long.

Just a few miles down from Poipu beach park is Spouting Horn, a wonderful natural blowhole. When the waves come toward the shore, they crash into a cave blowing sea water high into the air. You can feel the spray from the lookout and it cools you off on a hot day.

As you look down the coast of Poipu, you may see a breeching humpback whale or its blowhole blowing misty water or a gliding green sea turtle looking for food or some dolphins playing peacefully together.

Tombolo, tombolo, we have three tombolos on the island of Kauai and we are the only island in Hawaii that has tombolo's. Poipu is one of those beaches. A tombolo is like a sandbar that is built across the ocean from the bottom of one island to another or from the shore to an island. This point in Poipu is known as Nukumoi Point. If you go in the water here, you will see a lot of fish. It's great for snorkeling.
