Fishes of Hawaii

Spotted green puffer-it is the most poisonous of all the puffers. Some Hawaiians used to call it meke meke which means deadly death.

Bluespine unicornfish-they have a strange horn on their head and they have fluorescent blue tail spines. They have a sharp tail but it is smooth at the sides and when he wags his tail, it is a warning sign that he is going to attack. In old Hawaii, they used the tough skin for making drumheads. Bandit angelfish-it is found only in Hawaii not like the rest of the angelfishes. It is white and gray with a black stripe going through its eyes and running along the sides of its body. It is encountered at 50 feet or more and most of the time seen in pairs and eats sponges.

Potter's angelfish-the only true angelfish in Hawaii, Potter's angelfish are rusty orange on the front and back, gradually turning blackish below its body. They have irregular vertical blue lines. They can be seen at depths of 15 feet or more. It is named for Frederick A. Potter who was the director of the Waikiki Aquarium from 1903 to 1940.

Picasso triggerfish-it got its name from its colored lines that are geometrically arranged in a curious pattern. It is able to attack long-spined sea urchins. In 1984, it was voted the state fish. Its Hawaiian name means nose like a pig and it grunts like a pig when it's taken from the water. Hawaiian name: humuhumu-nukunuku-a-pua'a

Hawaiian scorpionfish-has pokey spines not likely to attract attention. It's quite fearless because it knows it has very sharp weapons.

Black-spotted goatfish-this is one of the non-schooling varieties of fish found around coral heads at 10 or 25-foot depths.
