Write your own ending to this animal adventure...
There was a pack of panthers who lived in the Florida Everglades. They were brave and loyal, but they were endangered. Developers kept coming closer and closer to their home.
Being threatened as they were, it was important to the pack to carry on its time-honored traditions for as long as possible. One tradition was to send a young panther out to make his own way in the world when he became a teenager. One morning in May, with the hot Florida sun breaking through the trees, it was Marco's turn to go out and make his own way. Marco was a fast and strong panther, but he was still a little afraid to leave the pack. He waved goodbye to his childhood friend Blacky. His mother and father were up in the cave taking care of newborn cubs, so they were not even there to see him off. As Marco padded off he was excited, frightened, and a little sad.
Marco soon melted from the view of his pack into the dense and humid Everglades. Before long he became hungry and thirsty and wondered which way he should go. He was pleasantly surprised when he found a very friendly fox named Loxi who lived in a large and comfortable cave. He invited Marco to stay and sleep there. Marco passed the day enjoyably hunting little birds for his dinner and lunch. In return for staying in the fox's cave, Marco helped Loxi crack nuts.
Inside the cave that night, the young panther slept on the moist soil of the cave, covered by a blanket of deer skin, with his head cradled on a pillow of feathers. He had survived his first day on his own and had made a new friend! With a sigh of satisfaction, he quickly fell asleep.
The next morning he waved goodbye to Loxi and went back to his pack to tell them about his adventure and his new friend. When he arrived though, he saw a hunter crouching in the bushes and shooting at the panthers! He started at a loud bang, and watched with horror as his friend, Blacky, slumped to the ground.
