Gila Monsters

Gila Monsters are very large, poisonous lizards. These large creatures live all over the Grand Canyon. Gila Monsters love to eat quail eggs. The Gila Monster and the Mexican Beaded lizards are the only poisonous lizards known. The Gila Monster can grow up to one foot and four inches. The Gila Monster has so much fat in its tail it can stop eating for over two months. Gila Monsters come out at night time during the summer and come out during the daytime in Spring and Fall.

Gila Monsters are very slow but they can travel many days before stopping. The Gila Monsters venom (poison) is very powerful. It mainly uses its venom to defend itself against its predators. When Gila Monsters are being attacked they will bite the predator and the animal will most likely die. If the Gila Monster bites a human it will only be very painful.
