• If you think your friend is an addict, offer to help.

• Don't be preachy.
• Just let him know you are there for him.

If someone you know is going through the CJS (Criminal Justice System) you could do any of the following to help them.
 

You can advise them not to talk to the Police without a representative.

Advise them to always seek legal advice regardless of how small the offense.

Try to encourage them to seek medical advice, especially if they fear withdrawal.

Help them to find a good lawyer.
