Fashion

Fashions in 1904 were made of fabrics different from 1999. Womens' dresses made of cotton always needed to be ironed. Wool was the fabric for mens' suits. There was light wool for summer and heavier wool for winter. Gentlemen, boys, and females did not wear denim. Lace and finer fabrics complemented womens' fashion.

The ladies fashion for day time usually resembled the Gibson Girl style. A shirtwaist blouse with a small collar, puffy sleeves, and a flared skirt made up the Gibson Girl style. Jackets accompanied the style in cooler weather. The "S" curve was in style. An undergarment called a corset helped to provide the "S" curve. Ladies who preferred a fancier style wore dresses with high collars trimmed with lace and fringe.

The gentlemen usually wore jackets at all times in public. The colors were usually dark: grays, browns, blacks, and blues. Summer suits were made of a very light wool. Shirts were worn with suits. The shirt collar/cuffs were strongly starched so they would be very stiff. Suits were plain, but still formal. Many gentlemen carried walking sticks. Hair styles were facial hair with a beard and a mustache or just a mustache.

In the warm days of summer, ladies carried parasols to protect them from the sun. Beautiful white complexions were seeked by all ladies.

Hats also accompanied their outfits. The smaller straw hat for the Gibson Style outfits and more ornate hats were worn with fancier dresses. Attached to the hats were flowers, feathers, ribbons, or plumes. A new hat would put a smile on a lady's face.

Shoes for men, women, and children were made of leather. There were no vinyl made shoes. Ladies shoes were styled with higher leather or fabric/leather tops fastened with buttons.

Formal clothing was also the style for children. Girls wore dresses with a long waste and trimmed with a wideruffle near the hem. A bow fastened the dress and was attached at the lower waste. Hair ribbons were attached near the top of a girls head with long locks hanging at her shoulders and many times it was longer.

Boys wore suits. In the summer the jacket would be forgotten. The trousers came to just below the knee and long socks would cover the bottom part of the legs.
