Big
Ben is possibly the most
famous landmark in London. The 13.5 ton bell first rang out
in 1859. On New Year's Eve, 1923, the bell was first heard
on radio. On New Year's Eve, 1949, it was both seen and
heard on television. The Clock Tower has 4 faces that are each 23 feet wide. The minute hands are each 14 feet in length, and the four dials on the clock measure 22 feet in diameter. Each dial contains 365 panes of glass, one for each day of the year. The clock connected to Big Ben is famous for its accuracy. Placing pennies inside the mechanism controls the Clock's accuracy. |
