Rock and Roll roots can be traced back to the early 20th century. It was first called rock n' roll. It had beginnings in blues, gospel and it was influenced by jazz. In the 1940s Chicago became a big blues recording center. In Chicago a new kind of blues began to appear. Electrically amplified guitars began to be used as well as harmonicas. Drummers who used after beats were also used. Boogie woogie rhythms were the basis of Chicago Blues. Black gospel music was popular after World War II. Most kinds of black music was given the name rhythm and blues or R and B. By the mid 1950's, black performers performed in front of white audiences. Radio jockeys called their music "rock n' roll". Rock and Roll was born after rhythm, blues and country music. America went crazy over rock and roll in 1956. Youth music became an international favorite.
