There are over 86,000 people buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery. Of all these people, we chose William Clark, Thomas Hart Benton, Peter Blow, Adolphus Busch, John Robert Gregg, and James S. McDonnell to research and provide biographical sketches of their lives. Each person was chosen for their contribution and significance to our American heritage. William Clark led the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804 from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean in which President Jefferson asked them to explore newly acquired lands from France. |
Thomas Hart Benton was one of the first two senators from Missouri. Peter Blow once owned Dred Scott, a famous slave who fought for his freedom in the court system of the United States. Peter Blow's sons played an important part in giving Dred Scott his freedom. Henry paid for Scott's legal bills, while Taylor gave Scott his freedom. James S. McDonnell started an aircraft factory in St. Louis in 1939, which became a world leader in making commercial jet liners, military aircrafts, the Mercury spacecrafts, and missiles. |
Adolphus Busch was founder of the Anheuser Busch Brewery, one of the largest breweries in the world. John Robert Gregg developed short hand, a system of writing used throughout the world in eleven languages. To learn more about these influential leaders, continue reading this web site. There are also games to play and maps of the cemetery to explore.
