When Thomas Hart Benton died, he did not have much money, so he got a small, gray granite marker. It looks very old and is about five feet tall. It was an obelisk monument. This obelisk shapes comes from the ancient Egyptians, and was covered with hieroglyphics telling about a person's life. About one hundred years later, the state of Missouri gave him a larger, red granite marker about ten feet tall. This obelisk was in honor of his political career. The older marker did not tell much about him. The more recent marker tells about his place in Missouri history as one of the first two senators.
