Commonly Used Terms

 ACE: the score given for a hole-in-one

BEACH: "the beach" is a nickname for a sand trap

 BIRDIE: a hole played in one stroke less than par

BOGEY: a hole played in one stroke more than par

CHIP: when an approach shot misses the green, to pop the ball a short distance into the air in order to get it on the putting surface

DOGLEG: a hole whose fairway is marked by a sharp bend in either direction

EAGLE: a hole played in two strokes less than par, on a par-four or par-five

FACE: the part of a club that makes contact with the ball

FAIRWAY: the groomed part of a hole between the tee box and the hole

FORE: the word called out to warn other players and spectators to beware of an errant shot

GREEN: the area of the hole where the cup and flag are

HANDICAP: the number of free strokes an amateur player needs, on average, to record a score of even par for the round

HAZARD: areas on the course, such as ponds, lakes and bunkers, where special rules govern play

HONOR: the privilege of playing first from the tee

HOOK: for right-handed players, a ball that veers sharply from right to left. For left handed players; a ball that veers sharply from left to right

HEEL: the part of the clubface closest to the hosel

HOSEL: the socket into which the shaft of a club is fitted

ROUGH: the part of a course that is not the tee, the fairway, the green or a hazard, usually characterized by thick tall grass

TEEBOX: the area from which a player "tees off" or takes their first shot on a hole

TOE: the upper edge of a clubface

FRONT 9: the first nine holes

BACK 9: the last nine holes

WHIFF: when you are addressing the golf ball and miss
