Rain Forest Mammals

Many mammals live in the tropical rain forests. Many of them spend their lives in trees, and barely ever touch the ground. Canopy animals have adapted to living in the tops of trees. Some never come down to the ground. Others spend their lives on the forest floor. The nuts and fruits of the canopy provide food for bats, gibbons, monkeys and squirrels. These are some of the many wonderful mammals that live in our endangered rain forests.

 

Anteaters are nomadic. They live in trees. Only the giant anteaters live on the forest floor.

 

Capibaras are members of the rodent family. They are the largest rodents in the world. They weigh up to 160 pounds.

 

Elephants are the largest mammals in the rain forest. They suck on their trunks like we suck on our thumbs.

 

Gorillas are big hairy very strong. They can grow to be 6 feet tall and can be 450 pounds. They could win a tug-a-war against 6 men.

 

Kangaroo babies names are Joeys. Kangaroos are born on the forest floor. When baby kangaroos are born they weigh about as much as a grain of rice. 

 

Macaques are born in trees or on the ground. Babies weigh 1/2 pounds. Adults weigh 10-15 pounds.

 

Margays look like ocelots and climb like cats. They eat insects and small monkeys.

 

Marmosets are born in treetops. Babies weigh 1 1/2 ounces or less. Adults weigh 4 or 5 ounces. They have 1 baby.

 

Orangutans are born in tree nests. When they are born they weigh 3 1/2 pounds. Males weigh up to 350 pounds, and females weigh about 150 pounds when fully grown.

 

Sloths are slow moving mammals that are born in treetops. They eat leaves and shoots.

 

Tapirs are related to the rhinoceros and the horse family. It eats at night time and it eats plants and leaves, and it uses its small snout to grab its plants.

 

Vampire Bat- Bats are the only flying mammals. The vampire bat only sucks blood
