Geological Standouts
Asia, the biggest continent in the world, has
many geological standouts. The Great Wall of China is one of them. It is
the largest man made structure in the world. The Great Wall of
China stretches 2400 km (1500 mi.). Shih Hung Ti, the first emperor (221-210
BC) of China, constructed the largest portion of the wall out of earth,
stone, and brick as a barrier against raids by normadic peoples from the
north. After centuries of neglect, the Chinese Communists restored three
sections of the wall as an attraction for visitors.
One of the other world record standouts is the Himalaya mountain range. The Himalaya mountain range is the tallest mountain range in the world. It extends through most of Nepal and helped shape its northern border. Nine of the 14 highest mountains in the world, including Mt. Everest, are located either wholly or partially in the country.
Mt. Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, is among the Himalaya mountains. It stands 8848m/29,028 ft. high and is along the frontier between Nepal and Tibet. Numerous groupsof people have tried to scale the mountain and reach the summit before the successful attempt by two members of a British expedition on May 23, 1953.
