Soccer

A soccer game consists of two 45-minute halves by two teams of 11 players. The game begins with a
coin toss, and the captain who wins it chooses what goal to defend. Players may use any part of their body
except the hands to move the ball up field. The goalkeeper is the only player to use his/her hands. A goal is
scored when the whole ball travels across the goal line between the posts and under the bar. The ball switches
possession if the ball crosses the touch line or the goal line. A throw in is awarded if the ball crosses the touch
line, and a goal or corner kick is awarded if the ball crosses the goal line. Referees and linesmen control the
game and may award free kicks and penalty kicks when rules are broken. Players who continuously break the
rules can be sent out of the game by the referee.
