Mother Teresa

(Agnes Gonxaha Bojaxhiv)

1910-1997

Mother Teresa was an incredibly kind woman.  She gave her life to helping the poor, homeless, and needy people.

Agnes Bojaxhiv was born in 1910 in Skopje, Yugoslavia.   In 1950, the Missionaries of Charity, Mother's Teresa's sisterhood, started.   The House for the Dying opened in 1952.  Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity started work with lepers and in many disaster areas of the world.

Mother Teresa's kindness led her to winning the Nobel Peace Prize.  Agnes was very happy of her achievements.  The following is an excerpt from her incredible speech:

"I CHOSE THE POVERTY OF OUR POOR PEOPLE, BUT I'M GRATEFUL TO RECEIVE THIS (NOBEL) IN THE NAME OF THE HUNGRY, THE NAKED, THE HOMELESS, OF THE CRIPPLED, OF THE BLIND, THE LEPERS, ALL THOSE PEOPLE WHO FEEL UNWANTED, UNLOVED, UNCARED FOR THROUGHOUT SOCIETY, PEOPLE THAT HAVE BECOME A BURDEN TO THE SOCIETY, AND ARE SHUNNED BY EVERYONE."
