Floods are caused by snow melting very rapidly and by heavy rain. This causes more water than usual. The ground is already wet so the water has nowhere to go. There is no way to predict when a flood will happen. Some people live in floodplains. A floodplain is an area where floods have occurred from time to time in the past. Floods cause lots of damage to buildings, forests and farmlands.
