The leader of the Supreme Court is called the Chief Justice . The Chief Justices so far are John Rutledge , John Jay, Oliver Ellsworth, John Marshall, Roger Brook Taney, Sal N. Portland Chase, Morrison R Waite, Melville W. Fuller, Edward D. White,William H. Taft, Charles E. Huges, and Harlan F. Stone. The Chief Justice today is William Rehnquist. This is important to our nation because it was the first part of the Judicial Branch. All the courts were made by the Constitution .

William Taft was the only person to serve as a president and a Chief Justice.
John Jay was the first Chief Justice. Sandra Day OConner was the first female Chief Justice.Samuel Chase was the only Chief Justice to be impeached by the House Of Representatives but acquitted by the Senate.
