Ho Chi Minh

minh.gif (137717 bytes) Ho Chi Minh was a Vietnamese communist leader. He was the main force behind Vietnam’s war with the colonizing French. He was born on the day of May 19, 1890 in the small village of Kimlien, Annam. His real name was Nguyen Tat Thanh. He went to school in Hue.After World War I, while using the fake name of Nguyen Ai Quoc, he entered in awesome activities and was in the group that founded the French Communist party. He was wanted, and he went to Moscow for training. He was sent to Canton, China and put together a revolutionary group among Vietnamese outcasts. He was made to leave China when local officials cracked down on Communist activities. He then went back to China in 1930 to be the founder of the Indochinese Communist party (ICP). He stayed in Hong Kong to be a representative of the Communist International. In June of 1931, Ho Chi Minh was arrested by British police officers and stayed in prison until he was released in 1933. He then went back to the Soviet Union where he spent many years recovering from tuberculosis. He returned to China in 1938 and was an advisor to the Chinese Communist armed forces. In 1941 when Japan was in control of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh took up contact again with ICP leaders and helped found a brand new Communist-dominated independence organization known as the Viet Minh that fought the Japanese. However, in August of 1945, when Japan surrendered after being nuked, the Viet Minh took control of Vietnam and announced the Democratic Republic of VietCommunist-dominated independence organization known as the Viet Minh that fought the Japanese. Ho Chi Minh, who was in poor health, on September 3rd, 1969, died of heart failure. In his honor, after the Communists defeated the South, Vietnam renamed Saigon to Ho Chi Minh City.
