Sharp Shinned Hawk

    A Sharp Shinned Hawk has a scientific name, too.  It is Accipiter striatus.  Sharp Shinned Hawks have tails that are square shaped.  It is found in  North America and in Central America and in Argentina and Brazil.  Some are seen at a couple of bird feeders in Minnesota every winter.  The Sharp Shinned Hawk is a bird of woodlands where nests are.  These birds build a stick nest.  They eat mostly little songbirds.  A Sharp Shinned is a raptor.  It means it eats other animal's meat.  Sharp Shinned Hawks have pointed claws.  They wait for prey then strike at about 50 mph.  These birds nest high and sometimes lay 4 to 5 eggs.  It will take 3 to 4 weeks for a baby to leave its nest.
