Interview with Dr. Kurtzman

I conducted an interview with Daniel Kurtzman, M.D. Dr. Kurtzman is an otorhinolaryngologist, an ear, nose and throat specialist. I talked with him about the new technologies for deaf people.

Think Quest: Cochlear implants are the new technology, right?

Dr. Kurtzman: Yes.

Think Quest: How do they work?

Dr. Kurtzman: The cochlear implant is an electronic device that receives sound and sends it to the nerve system which controls the hearing.

Think Quest: Does it work on certain people?

Dr. Kurtzman: It only works on people that can't hear at all. It won't work on someone who has little loss of hearing. Only people with total loss.

Think Quest: Is there something that can happen to the person with the device?

Dr. Kurtzman: Well, it takes lots of therapy. The people who receive it have to learn how to hear. It's like learning something new. It just takes a little time.

Think Quest: My last question is, are there any other new technologies?

Dr. Kurtzman: They've been working with this technology for a while and it's always improving. The cochlear implant is working much better now than before.
