I interviewed Jay, a deaf boy
from our school. He is in 5th grade. Jay has been going
to Sherwood School since he was three. This is his second
year participating with in a class with the hearing
students. He is in my class for social studies, science,
and math. For the other subjects he is in a class with
four other deaf kids.
TQ: Do you use any special
equipment?
Jay: I use a hearing aid to help me
hear.
TQ: What do you like to do with
your friends?
Jay: I like to play Nintendo 64 and
basketball.
TQ: How did you decide it was okay
to play with the boys on the playground?
Jay: The hearing kids asked me to
play.
TQ: How did that make you
feel?
Jay: Very good. I wanted to make
more friends by staying in class with the hearing kids in
4th grade for more time instead of just math
class.
TQ: What has been difficult about
being deaf?
Jay: It's been hard to talk to
someone. They don't know what I'm saying unless they know
sign language. It was very hard to watch the hearing kids
playing together and talking.
TQ: Is there anything else that
you'd like to say?
Jay: Yes. I think you should do
what you want to do and that it should not matter that
you have a disability.
