Communicating with the Deaf

How can you communicate with people who can't hear? There are many ways to communicate with hearing impaired kids. You can even talk on the phone with them! I know, you're probably thinking "What!?" But it's true.

The most common way of communicating with deaf kids is finger spelling. Every letter in the alphabet has a sign. You can spell out words by using finger spelling to sign the letters. There are even some signs for one whole word. Most words have their own sign. Some words you just have to spell with finger spelling. You can see a dictionary to learn some of the easy signs.

Lots of deaf kids have hearing aids. Hearing aids convert sound to electrical energy, amplifies it, and changes it to sound.

There are even dogs that can help the deaf. The American Humane Association trains dogs to help deaf people by learning to alert their masters when alarms or doorbells go off or a baby crying.

TDD (Telecommunication Device for the Deaf) is a device connected to a telephone by a special adapter. It's like a computer and you type the messages and send it to the person on the other line. Only people with TDDs can receive the messages.
