Loss of hearing doesn't just
happen when you're born. There are lots of other ways.
Meningitis--what
in the world does that mean? A common hearing loss is
presbycusis.
What? Who made up these words?
Some hearing loss causes are
diseases. The main disease is ottis
media, which is an
infection to the middle ear bone. It usually happens in
early childhood. Meningitis, or a high fever, can cause
damage to the inner ear.
Birth defects that occur during
pregnancy may cause hearing loss. If a pregnant woman has
the German Measles it can cause a hearing loss in her
unborn child. A blood substance in unborn children called
the Rh Factor can also cause hearing loss.
Environmental factors can cause
hearing loss. Tinnitus
is a disease that occurs when a person is exposed to
consistent loud noises . An explosion or gunshot can
gradually give you permanent hearing loss. If you work in
a large factory with loud machinery that makes lots of
noise can cause Tinnitus.
Hearing loss can be caused by a
high fever. That is called meningitis which can damage
the inner ear plus damage the auditory
system.
Aging is also a common cause for
hearing loss. Two thirds of people over 65 years of age
in the United States get a kind of hearing loss called
presbycusis. Some scientists think that aging may also
cause changes in the auditory system or in the brain that
reduce hearing ability.
