"Get away from
me!"
"That kid is weird!"
"Don't play with
him!"
This is what I used to say about
the deaf students at my school. I didn't play with them,
I didn't become friends with them. It was like they were
from some other planet.
Then I saw David. He looked like an
ordinary kid to me. I went up to talk to him. He didn't
talk back. I suddenly realized that he was deaf. I
treated him like all the other deaf kids. I didn't play
with him, I didn't become friends with him. But you know
what? He's so nice he offered his friendship and included
me. From then on I looked at the deaf kids at my school
differently. I didn't see how they talked or how they did
things differently. I looked at what was inside the
person.
This story could have been about
how you dress, your religion, or practically anything.
The point of the story is, it's not really the outside of
a person, it's the inside of the person that
counts.
