Temperature

Can be affected by:

  • Seasons - Most ares of the country have winter, spring, summer, and fall.
  • Climate - Average temperatures are different across the US.
  • Wind - The amount of wind makes the temperature feel colder or warmer. The wind chill effect makes a cold day feel even colder.
  • Humidity - The amount of moisture in the air can affect the temperature. Humidity can make a warm day feel even warmer. This is sometimes called the Heat Index.

Precipitation...

  • thunderstorms
  • showers
  • rain
  • ice
  • snow

...caused by the Water Cycle

Fronts and Air Masses

  • A front is the leading edge of an air mass.
  • An air mass is a large area of air with common characteristics (temperature, air pressure, humidity)
  • A dry line separates a moist and humid air mass from a dry air mass.

Map Symbols of Fronts

A stationary front is an air mass that is not moving.

A cold front is an area of cooler air, not cold air. It is possible to have cold fronts in the summer. A cold front often triggers storms.

A warm front is a leading edge of warmer air.

An occluded front occurs when a faster moving cold front passes under a warm front, and catches up to another cold front.
