Bats of the Amazon

Rainforest

Bats belong to an order of animals called Chiroptera. The name means "hand-wing" in Greek. Each wing is made of two layers of skin called the wing membrane. The clawed thumb is free of the wing. The bat uses it to cling to the ceiling of its roost.

There are two types of Chiroptera. Megachiroptera eat fruit and flower nectar.

The Microchiroptera are smaller but are larger in numbers. They are found on every continent except Antarctica and eat mostly insects.

Bats range in body size from as small as I inch too as large as 16 inches. Body weights range from 2 grams to more than 2.9 lbs.

Forget the expression," blind as a bat", none of these animals are really sightless. Several bats can see better than humans in dim light. However, only the Megachiroptera can see color.
