Polar Bear

Ursus maritimus

Polb.tif (14132165 bytes)

Vulnerable:

Animals that are still quite numerous, but are under great threat (IUCN)

The polar bear is the king of the north. Other animals in the environment include seals, walruses, foxes, and geese.

An average male weighs a half a ton. The average female weighs a quarter of a ton. The largest polar bear ever was a male that stood 11 feet tall and weighed nearly a ton.

Polar bears are very athletic. They can jump over a 20 foot crack in the ice. They can also climb up steep banks and can swim very long distances. The bear has a thick layer of blubber to keep it warm.

The polar bear is  mostly carnivorous. They mainly eat seals. In late summer and early autumn the bears patrol the banks looking for whale carcasses. Up to 10 bears can be seen feeding on one carcass. In the summer the bears have a wider variety of prey including lemming, arctic foxes, and eider duck.

The cubs live with their mother for 3 years. The mothers are very protective. Normally 1 to 2 babies are in a litter. One polar bear lived in the London Zoo for 41 years.
