For You to Think About

By Hillary, Haley, Faith

Read each of the cases below and decide what rights are being broken for these children.  You have probably heard of cases like these.  If you would like to add cases or make a comment, please write to our web page.

 1.   In China it is a tradition to kill unborn girls.  If a girl is the first baby, they won't have an abortion.  If she is the second child, they will.  A couple giving birth to a son is allowed one child.  But a rural family that has a girl first is allowed a second child.  Parents often keep the first girl, then abort other pregnancies until an ultrasound shows a male child.

    2.  A 32-year-old Maryland man plead guilty to abusing a 14-year-old girl he met in an Internet chat room.  He plead guilty to four abuse charges and faces up to a year in prison.  Investigators said that the man and the girl met online and she met him in person in August.

    3.  A 12-year-old boy shot himself with a gun.  His brother and grandpa were in the garage that was not connected to the house.  His mom and little sister came home and found him on the front porch.  He shot himself with a shotgun.  He had been told never to touch a gun.  I wonder if he listened.

    4.  A young boy's mom told him she had to work late.  She worked not far from her home.  He got mad and tried to ride his bike to his mom's workplace.  He got 5 miles down the road and a car hit him.

    5.  A two-year-old little boy was found near the Marta station.  He had no coat and was crying for his mother.  The toddler almost got into traffic.  The temperature was below freezing.  The child's mother told the police some was supposed to watch him while she went to court.

    6.  The shoelaces and a pair of little brown boots were found.  Police think they belong to a child that has been missing a while.  Investigators say the child is between the age of 5 and 7 and about four feet tall.  Police found a body but it does not match any of the 100 black children missing in Atlanta.

    7.  A girl named Pat was brought up in a city where war was a way of life.  The other day she and her mom had to leave to go to another country.  They left their home town on buses.  A lot more than a thousand people left all at the same time.  It turned out that they had to leave all their things behind.  Her mom told her that they are now refugees.  Some people will not talk to them because of their religion.  Now they have no toys, no home, no books, and no friends.  They think they'll never see their friends or family again.  They are all crowded and hungry and soldiers often interfere with them.  Pat's mom cries all the time.  Pat tries to be strong, but she's really scared.

    8.  A boy named Josh is ten years old and from a very small village.  He left his home and went to the city to work for money to send to his family.  He's now working in a factory that makes T-shirts.  He works twelve hours a day and he doesn't get much money.  The factory is extremely hot and dirty.  There's not many windows and it's sometimes hard to breathe.  The boss is extremely mean and sometimes beats him.  He makes his work hard and doesn't let him have any breaks.  He and his friends want to leave the factory but they know working in a factory with a mean boss is better than begging in the streets.

    9.  There is a boy named John that is eight years old and lives with his family.  Every night his father gets home late.  He often comes home drunk and hits his mom.  His dad hits him, too.  He can't tell him how he feels because he's the boss of the house.  He says it's his home and John doesn't have any rights to talk about things that don't have anything to do with him.  John thinks he is really wrong and he thinks it has something to do with him if his dad beats on his mom and him.  He feels bad about it and he's planning to run away from home when he turns eleven years old.  He says he will go to a place that his dad will never suspect to find him.

    10.  Two Cobb County special education students are kicked out of all schools in Cobb County because they brought a gun to school.  They will be in jail five years.  They brought a pistol.  The ages of the boys were 14 and 12.

    11.  Jon Benet Ramsey's case has been a shock.  It is called, "Perfect Murder, perfect town."  This case has been going on for 2 years and 13 months.  She was killed Christmas night.  She was only 6 years old and deserved a life.
