My name is Zak R. and I had a bone marrow transplant. I am in 4th grade. I got my bone marrow transplant last year. I had it done in Minnesota. The reason I had a bone marrow transplant was because I had Aplastic Anemia. It failed my bones. It felt kind of good but I'm glad to get it over with. Right now I am feeling much better.

I went into Fairview Medical University Center in Minnesota on September 30, 1998. I was in the medical center for 65 days. First I had transfusions because my platelets were going down and I needed them to stay alive. Then I had Chemo and radiation to kill my old bone marrow. My hair fell out. Then I had my bone marrow transplant. I was asleep. It took 14 days until I had new marrow. I made my own white blood cells to make me well.

Last November I went on the Montel Williams Show to meet my donor. My donor's name is Joseph. After the show we went out to lunch with Joseph and his parents. Joseph was nice to me. I'm glad I got to meet him.

Well, it is ok to tell you this story my parents will not mind. My grandfather had lost blood, I mean really lost a lot of blood so he had to go to the hospital to get more blood. They pumped blood into my grandfather for 8 hours. My mom and step grandmother had to DONATE blood for my grandfather. I was going to donate even thought I did not want to because I was very scared, but I was too young.
