Pablo Picasso
Early Life
Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881, in Malaga,
Spain. His father, Jose Ruiz, was an art teacher. He hoped one
day his son would be a great artist. This might have inspired him to
paint. His mother, Maria Picasso, Ruiz was know for her wit and
intelligence.
Picasso made his first painting when he was only 10 years old.
When Picasso was about 13 years old his father came home and saw a
still life that had just been finished by his son. After that his
father never painted again.
At age 14, Picasso entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona.
To get into the Academy, he had to take an examination. Picasso
finished his examination drawings in only one day. It took most other
students a month to complete. Unfortunately, he was not satisfied
with this Academy so he moved to Madrid and began studies at the San
Fernando Academy. This was the first time the 16 year old, Picasso,
had ever been on his own.
