Americans throw away enough glass bottles and jars to fill the 1,350 foot tall Twin Towers in New York City Trade Center every two weeks.

We throw away over 25 billion styrofoam coffee cups every year and 2.5 million plastic beverage bottles every hour.

Every year the typical American family throws away:
        • 2,460 lb.. of paper
        • 540 lb.. of metal
        • 480 lb.. of glass
        • 480 lb.. of food scraps
If you add all of this trash up, you would come up with a total of 3,960 lb.. of trash...WOW...That is what ONE typical American family throws away in a year.
Each of us throw more than 1,200 lb.. of trash away in a year.  American's throw away about 40,000,000 soft drink cans and bottles every year.
Most metal can be melted down and recycled, saving huge amounts of energy.  We have to recycle so we can save every living thing.  Right now people aren't in the risk that other animals are, but this will change.  A hundred years ago the earth was cleaner, there was little pollution, of the air, land or water.  We have forgotten how to keep our earth clean and tidy.
If every American recycled newspaper we would save about 25 million trees each year.
People just don't think that what they do today will effect tomorrow, both for the good and for the bad.
Kids can do things to help too!
        • Start a composed pile in the back yard.
        • Use a cloth lunch bag instead of paper.
        • Collect paper for recycling.
        • Help plant trees.
        • Walk or ride a bike instead of taking a car.
        • Separate out the recycling in your home garbage and then recycle it.
        • Pick up litter.
        • Use a handkerchief instead of tissue.
        • Use a cloth napkin instead of a paper one.
        • Reuse plastic bags, aluminum trays and glass jars.
