Glossary


Aleut - A native American culture inhabiting the Aleutian Islands and coastal areas of Southwest Alaska.

Armory - A building especially made for storing military equipment.

Atlatals - a weapon used by the Aleuts to hunt sea otters. It was like a spear that they threw and it was attached to a rope so that they could pull the otter back to the baidarka.

Baidarka - A type of kayak or boat the Aleuts used for hunting sea otters It was made from the intestines of seals.

Ceremony - A formal act or set of acts performed usually for religious purposes.

Creole - A person with a Russian father and Native American mother.

Expedition - A long journey undertaken by a group of people with a definite objective.

Kashaya Pomo - A tribe or colony of people that used to live next to Fort Ross.

Merchant- A person who specializes in trading

Mettini - what the Kashaya Pomo called Fort Ross.

Mission-A Spanish church

Pelts-The fur of an animal

Russian Orthodox Church - the main church within Russia. It is a form of Christianity.

Russian-American Company - The company that built Fort Ross.

Scurvy-A medical condition that happens when you don't get enough vitamin C.

Settlement Ross - what the Russians called Fort Ross. They called it "Settlement Ross" because there was never a battle at Fort Ross.
