Chips

    One of the two dogs (see George) that we found was Chips, a German shepherd. He was the only animal to win the Silver Star and the Purple Heart medals for bravery during World War Two. He was part of the K-9 Korps and his owner/trainer was Private John R. Powell. Chips landed on Sicily, Italy on July 10, 1943, with the 3rd Infantry Division. He, all by himself, stopped an Italian machine gun. Unfortunatly, Chips's medals were taken away because the public didn't react very well to a dog receiving medals.
