World War II began on Sept.1, 1939. France and Britain declared war on Germany two days later. Germany then attacked on Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Germany invaded on the French through Belgium on May 12, passing northwest of the Maginot line. Then Germans launched a major attack on the south June 5 entered Paris on June 14. France signed an armistice with Germany on June 22. Germany occupied two thirds of northern France , the southern France was still occupied by the French. Marshal Henri Philippe Petain governed southern France . When France fell, General Charles de Gaulle fled to London. To continue to fight against the Germans a movement was made called Free France. It spread throughout France . They hid and fought against Germans. In French North Africa Allie troops landed and then on November 1942 German troops occupied southern France. On June 6, 1944 Allie troops landed in Normandy France. On August 15 they landed in southern France. After heavy loss Allie troops entered Paris on August 25. De Gaulle became president. In 1945, France became part of the United Nations.
