How it all Happened
Hello my friends This is the page on how the news got out --- here it is. John Sutter owned the famous fort that the gold was first found at. This fort was called, Sutter's Fort. His workers were the ones to first find the gold and then they no longer needed to work so they moved out to there homes. When it first went to the papers that gold was found, most people didn't believe it until Sam Brannan, a newspaper publisher, took a bottle of gold dust and yelled, "Gold, gold, in the streets of San Francisco!!!" Soon many people were riding his ferry and buying his mining tools from his shop. He saved up money and later bought a hotel by the mining area. Soon he made about $156,000 from his hotel. John Sutter later was very angry, and went to court, but he lost. Later he moved to a different area.
