The Book: Titanic Crossing
Titanic Crossing won the Mark Twain award in the 1997-1998 school year.It is about a boy who journeys on the Titanic with his mother Kitty, his uncle Clay, and his sister Ginny. His name is Albert. His sister, who is about seven years old, pretends to have appendicitis because she wants to take her nurse(an English babysitter) with her to America. She thinks it will work because appendicitis is what killed her and Albert's father. It doesn't work, though. Then,Albert meets Emily. He thinks she is almost as annoying as his sister. She thinks he is "absolutely wonderful!"She annoys him throughout the rest of the book. Then she does something nice. When the officers wouldn't let Albert on the lifeboat with Ginny, she took Ginny in her own boat with her family. After they get on the Carpathia ,they find their mother and uncle were lost. So they go to live with their grandma by themselves. Then something wonderful happens. Albert suggests that he and their manservant dig a swimming pool and the grandma-the stern, strict grandma-says yes!
