Sunday, January 11, 1987, in Cleveland Stadium, the Cleveland Browns battled the Denver Broncos for the AFC Championship. At the end of the first half, Cleveland and Denver were tied by a score of 10-10. At the end of the 3rd quarter, the Broncos were winning by a score of 13-10. But toward the end of the 4th quarter, the Browns turned the lead around to their advantage, by the score of 20-13. That was when the Broncos played one of the most excellent games in NFL history.

It all started at the Denver 2-yard line. On the first play, Elway passed the ball to Sammy Winder for a 5-yard gain. Again, Elway tossed it to Winder, who ran for a 3-yard gain. The next play, they got the first down.

Elway handed it to Winder for another 3-yard gain. On the next play, Mr. Ed (John Elway) decided to scramble for an 11-yard gain and a first down. John is a wiggle-worm when it comes to getting sacked.

Yet it wasn't all John Elway and Sammy Winder. John's next pass hit Steve Sewell for a 22-yard gain, with three minutes to go.

On the seventh play of The Drive, Elway hit Steve Watson for a 12-yard gain.

The next three plays were of no use. On the 8th play, John was sacked. For the next two plays, John threw incomplete passes.

On the 11th play, there was a mix-up between Mark Jackson and John Elway, yet they still pulled out of it and got a 20-yard gain, and a first down.

John Elway snuck in a 14-yard pass to Sewell on the 12th play.

On the next play, John threw an incomplete pass intended for Watson.

Like I said before, John Elway is a wiggle-worm when it comes to getting sacked. On the second-to-last play, he scrambled to the Browns' 5-yard line for a 9-yard gain.

It was with 39 seconds to spare that John Elway drilled it to Mark Jackson for the game-tying touchdown that sent it into overtime. The Broncos won in overtime by a 33-yard Rich-Karlis field goal with 5:48 left on the clock. This is a major accomplishment in the record books of NFL history.

One thing still remains, though. The Broncos worked hard that year, but they came for nothing. The New York Giants beat Denver in Super Bowl XXI, by the score of 39-20. John would, in years to come, get two Super Bowl win rings (they do have rings for the losers of the Super Bowl, you know).
