Gettysburg – How It Came To Be

Gettysburg was an unexpected disaster on July 1-3 that was one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War. The Battle of Gettysburg was never expected and was not planned. There are many ways to describe how the mysterious battle began, but only one explanation is needed.

It all started after the battles of Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg were won by General Lee’s army and he was ready to execute a plan to take over the North. Lee and his army dashed north to the Virginia border when his army split into three main groups. As Lee reached Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, he learned that he would not have enough supplies to last his entire plan. He called in the three separated groups and headed south to Virginia to get more supplies. The road that he took passed through Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

On the other side, Meade’s troops were fleeing north because of their loss to Lee in Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg. They received supplies as they went getting a position in the farther north. They too were on a road leading to Gettysburg. It ended in a clash of forces in Gettysburg. Both forces of troops didn’t spot each other until they were about a mile or two away from each other. Both groups responded differently; Lee retreated a small distance while Meade took positions in the best possible places for battle. In chaos, both forces got organized for battle, the Battle of Gettysburg.
