Soccer is the fastest growing sport in the United States. The number of people playing soccer has grown from an estimated 500,000 in 1973 to about 3,000,000 in 1980. In 1977 more than 600,000 young people in the United States is in organized leagues and 5,000 high schools fielded soccer teams. Soccer is also the fastest growing sport on the college level, with 60 percent of all colleges and universities now in soccer.
