The '90s were probably the decade with the greatest variety of styles of music. The early '90s were ruled by grunge bands like Guns 'n Roses, Nirvana, Sound Garden, and  Alice in Chains. Music from previous decades sadly did not become as popular again, but you hear a lot of it in hip-hop.  Seventy percent of hip-hop is sampling. Artists who do this a lot are the Beastie Boys and Puff Daddy.  Gangsta rap also became a respected form or genre that was widely commercialized by M.T.V. With rappers like 2 pac and Dr. Dre, East Coast vs. West Coast rap escalated into the murders of numerous stars. Pop still thrives today especially within its teen idol genre. Some famous artists belonging to the teen idol genre are Hanson, Backstreet Boys, and The Spice Girls. Country music's Garth Brooks topped the charts with his soothing hits while Reba Macintire continues to put smiles on her fans' faces. Within all this good again came the bad. In the constant change some rock stars reverted to "shocking" their audiences. This form of entertainment is known as "Shock Rock". Marylin Manson is known to be a shock rocker because of his constant screaming and yelling like something out of a nightmare. We lost a lot of stars like the Notorious B.I.G, 2 pac , Brad Nowell and the king of grunge Kurt Kobain.

Some of the Most Popular Artists of the Decade:

Maryl in

Manson

Manson has created a legion of fans. Whether we like it or not, he is a defining artist of the '90s. His "Shock Rock" has been heard by almost everyone in America. Some of his Hits include "Beautiful People" and "The Dope Show".

Rancid was one of the most popular
punk bands in the 90s with hits like
"Time Bomb", "Ruby Soho", and "Blood Clot ".

Sublime was a very popular punk / ska band in the 90s with hits like "What I Got" , "Santeria" , "Wrong Way", and "Caress Me Down". Sublime disbanded when the lead singer Brad Nowell tragically died from a drug overdose.

 SPICE GIRLS!!!

The Spice Girls have created a huge fan base with young people. They have spawned records, movies and tons of sold out shows. These girls from England go by the names of Mel.B(Scary Spice), Mel.C (Sporty Spice) ,Victoria (Posh Spice) ,Emma (Baby Spice), and Gerry(Ginger Spice), who recently left the group. Hits include "Say You'll Be There","Two Become One", and "Wannabe".

2 Pac was a pioneer of Gangsta rap

with hits like "California Love", "Hail Mary",

and the recent hit "Changes". 2 pac was killed

in a drive-by shooting in 1996. Many say it was he

who paved the road for East Coast versus West

Coast rap, but he is remembered to all as a great musician.
