Echo and Narcissus

Once upon a time in Greece there was a young man named Narcissus. People say he was the most handsome man in Greece. Narcissus was desperately looking for someone as beautiful as he.
Echo was a beautiful water nymph. Echo had had an affair with Zeus. Hera found out and gave her a horrible punishment. Hera said," Echo, for the rest of your life you may not speak and tell another secret behind my back. I despise you so. And to make you look like a real idiot, the only thing you can say is the end of someone's sentence. That should teach an ugly nymph like you.
Echo cried for days and days. Not just from the punishment but from the insults, too. She would only stay inside and pout for fear that someone would make fun of her. One day Echo finally got over her fear and took a walk in the woods.
Narcissus was hunting in the same woods as Echo. Echo saw him hunting and immediately fell in love with him. She followed him for a while, forgetting about her punishment. Finally she strolled up to him. She tried to say hello but couldn't . It was too late to run now because he had already seen her.

" Hello," said Narcissus. Echo said hello also because she had to. He started talking and after his last word of a sentence she would say the last word. Narcissus began to get aggravated from this speech problem and left. Echo followed him. After every time she tapped him to get his attention, he told her to leave him alone.

So Echo went home and cried and prayed to Aphrodite. Aphrodite favored this little nymph and said," I will take you and put you in a small creek where no one may hurt you.'' So Aphrodite did just that. Echo was much happier in the small creek. About a week later Narcissus was hunting near the creek. He decided that he would get a sip of water from the creek. He saw Echo and fell in love with her. But every time he tried to touch her she would disappear. Narcissus vowed he would never leave the pond. He never did.
