Odysseus was sent to the Underworld to meet Tiresias and learn about his wanderings. The Witch Circe sent Odysseus to complete this task and told him how to do it. She instructed him to go to a rock near Phlegethon River. There he dug a pit around the rock and filled it with libation to all the dead. Then all the souls rose and gathered about the pit.
